I read a really interesting article on the BBC today. It seems that they've been doing a series on 1989 and the fall of communism (in honor of the 20th anniversary of that year of change). Today, the editors profiled the impact of the 1989 events on Ukraine.
"How 1989 fanned flames in Ukraine"
Some of the most interesting comments:
"Gorbachev decided to let a little bit of genie out of the bottle. But you cannot let out just a little bit"
Poet Ivan Drach
"I envied the Poles. I thought they were 10 years ahead of us. But then things in Ukraine took off really quickly."
Writer Andrei Kurkov
"The degree of lies, secrecy and disregard for people's lives after Chernobyl critically undermined whatever was left of trust in the authorities."
